In May and June, Headingley Hall resident Ruth Julian exhibited art made across her life at HEART in Headingley, in their artist’s corridor exhibition space.

Ruth, who was born in Derby in 1933 and later lived in Plymouth before coming to Headingley, exhibited work at HEART that she has created over the years, though largely which she made in the 1990s.

Before the exhibition came to a close on 20 June, Ruth sat down with Westward Care to talk about her work. She explained how she honed her skills by “going to a painting class every week for decades”, painting something new every week, and that it was her daughter who convinced her to exhibit her work at HEART.

Asked what her advice would be to people interested in taking up painting, Ruth matter-of-factly replied “If you don’t enjoy it don’t do it, but if you do enjoy it do it!” Asked to describe what it meant to be an artist, Ruth said “Some people have got it…apparently I have it.” We couldn’t agree more!
