Paying care home fees

Paying for care is often the last thing on your mind when you are looking for a care home. However, care home fees should be one of your most important considerations. In general, paying for long term care is a complex subject and everyone’s situation is different.

If you have been medically assessed as being ready to move into a care home, then the local authority will carry out a financial assessment. This will determine if you are eligible for funding and how much you will need to contribute towards the care home fee. The Department of Health issue rules for calculating the cost of your care and your contributions. Local authorities must follow these guidelines.

If you expect to pay care home fees yourself, then you do not have to involve the local authority, and you do not have to undergo a financial assessment. Instead, the manager of the home you choose will simply carry out an assessment to make sure the home can meet your needs.
